Central America
Rugged, diverse, and predominantly Spanish-speaking (except for Belize), Central America encompasses the seven countries south of Mexico. These include Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Panama. It is part of the North American continent.
Many people lump the Caribbean islands in with Central America, bringing the count to 20. The key islands include Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.
We love this region for its colourful culture and frequent festivals. The people we met all had a passion for life. We have visited Central American beaches, jungles, and cities. We have kayaked, sailed, SCUBA dived, bicycled, snorkelled, and walked. In addition, we have been flown both in large commercial aircrafts and small planes, cruised, taken a bus, a van, and automobiles.
Central America’s highlights include Mayan ruins, dense rainforests, coffee plantations, endangered wildlife, magnificent birdlife, incredible underwater marine life, and delicious food and drink.
